'Galileo Was Wrong,' claims geocentrist writer

advertisement

Coming soon to a school district near you...

'The Earth is at the center of Robert Sungenis' universe. Literally.

Yours too, he says.

Sungenis is a geocentrist. He contends the sun orbits the Earth instead of vice versa. He says physics and the Bible show that the vastness of space revolves around us; that we're at the center of everything, on a planet that does not rotate.

He has just completed a 1,000-page tome, "Galileo Was Wrong," the first in a pair of books he hopes will persuade readers to "give Scripture its due place, and show that science is not all it's cracked up to be."'

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The worst part about this story (for me, a Catholic) is that this guy is Catholic. Apparently he hasn't really paid attention to the Vatican (or, you know, 6th grade science class) in a while. The Church is having a hard enough time, we don't need idiots dragging us into this "debate."

Oh, and briefly-

OK, really, why are so many people trying to push the human race back into the Dark Ages? Was there really something good going on back then?

Well, maybe medieval science was a little backwards, but it was because of the "Dark" Ages that Greco-Roman literature was preserved and commented on so that Renaissance thinkers had something to build on. And medieval Islamic thinkers made some pretty incredible scientific, mathematical, and medicinal advances in that period. So, while there was certainly some unpleasantness going around, and one wouldn't want to rewind humanity back to that time, there was actually quite a lot of good going on back then too. It is unfortunately a very common historical misconception that the "Dark" Ages were some sort of stone age or something.

Oooooh, I hope I didn't just start an unnecessarily long digression. :)

OH!-

Yes, everything is relative (except morals, as I'm told over and over in other discussions on this site)

My ears are burning, I think you were talking about me. :)

He really needs to come up with a more plausible theory - preferably blaming Bush for planning the 9/11 attacks. That should get him a better reception on Newsvine.

Yes, that's it. Today's headline. Newsvine "expert Blames Bush for Geocentric Universe!

@Kurticus: Wasn't specifically referring to you -- I get told that all over this place. :)

Speaking about the "Dark" Ages, did you ever read "How the Irish Saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill? It's a really good narrative history about early Ireland and the role the Irish monks played in preserving the Greek and Roman literature you mentioned. It's a good read -- light and entertaining for all its serious content.

(Just for the sake of the record.)

Robert C. Newman, "astrophysicist and biblical scholar", who ridicules in the Sungenis' "crackpot science", in the Sun Herald article, is credited with the following:

There are different opinions among scientists on many topics, Newman said. For instance, he favors intelligent design over evolution.

Sungenis wants to make sure "people don't classify geocentrists with Flat Earthers. We don't believe that at all.

-Oh, well that's good. I mean Flat Earthism (is that still around) is ridiculous and this, well, its so completely logical and well thought out...

America, I am telling you this for your own good. You have to get it together. Put a stop to these people, ridicule these people in every publication you can, petition your local school boards to prevent this crap from being taught in schools, go to book stores and move copies of these books into the fiction section. Future generations of Americans will be unable to think, invent, creative, innovate - they won't know how (or be allowed to do it). I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but please just put a stop to it. Unless you want your future generations to be riding around on donkeys, wearing sandals and saying "praise be" at the end of every sentence. Better safe than sorry.

      err.. you can't blame bush.

he is neither smart enough to figure it out on his own, nor is he creative enough to make that kind of crap up.

ahh the pleasures of ignorance. so he gets off scot free this time.

          @ evano-

I've heard of that book, but unfortunately I haven't gotten hold of a copy to read yet. I'll have to move it up a couple spaces on my list though.

I cannot imagine why the bible is considered so much more credible a source for truth than other ancient Mesopotamian texts...say the Mahabarata or the Ramayana. Perhaps if we look at the Bible as another ancient text like it very well is, we'll see that it should never be taken as a scientific text but rather as what most ancient texts are written to show us--morals and laws.

You know, if anybody actually wants to convince society that Intelligent Design is actually based on fact...uh, I really don't think this is the way of going about it.

Why is it that these nutjobs can never design a decent webpage. Every time I go off to one of these anti-evolution/God is good/etc... sites, they always look like a two year old designed it. (No offence to the 2 year old web designers that are out there)

                  Umer

Dont you guys think people like Galileo, Newton, Einstein and others where really really cool people!!!

We still find it difficult to prove/challenge their theories and their calculations!

I think Newton's theories/calculations were challenged by Einstein. And I'd say that alot of Einstein's theories have been proved in their specific context.

I have enough trouble attempting to wrap my head around the idea that there may in fact be a God. But my observations and my logical thinking show that what is going on in the world as it happens is what is truly occuring.

I'd like to see someone sit down and logically wrap their head around Quantum Physics, and explain the nature of a vast many thing, Black Holes? Dark Matter? Most people can't grasp basic algebra, let alone discrete math, or calculus, or vector math, why would you expect anyone to even CARE if the earth rotates around the sun, or the other way around, except for a small minority, this fact has no real consequence on everyday life. Even the Earth being flat wouldn't have much of an effect on anyone's life. Most people stay in the same area for most of their lives, and even the people that travel alot, go everywhere, they just get on a plane, and don't worry about what's going on until after they get off, unless something goes wrong with the plane. For all they care, the world could be a cube or a pyramid, they're just happy to be off the damn plane. Anyone who works in a field where this might matter, is by definition smart enough to realise that this guy has mental issues. This is one of those problems that if you ignore it, it will just go away.

This goes beyond a "point of reference" issue. Geocentrism is wrong because the Sun AND the other planets do not go around the Earth. If you pick the Earth as being the reference point, then the Sun does go around the Earth, but the planets would do this really strange squiggly orbit around us. Our observation, which incidentally can be made with the naked eye, a pencil, and lots of graph paper, proves that geocentrism doesn't jive with a normal almost circular orbit. Otherwise, why do the planets go backwards when circulating the Earth So the point of reference argument does NOT excuse geocentrism. Moving on....

This is one of those problems that if you ignore it, it will just go away.
                  -K.Hodge

I disagree. The guy with "mental issues" is propagating a belief that would bring us back centuries. Even people who clearly do not understand quantum physics, but swears an electron MUST be either here or there based on his own experiences is not doing us any favors. I don't expect everyone to learn everything in order to believe it, but I think it's dangerous for people to believe that pendulum swings rotate as the day goes by because God's hand is there to move it. Where does the religion end? Am I to now believe that the internet is just God's doing? This keyboard I push is just a bunch of buttons that doesn't actually DO anything, but God is looking over my shoulder and putting the correct letter on the monitor as I push this useless key. It just doesn't end when it comes to the "mental issues" guy.
